The problem one faces today in the commodities market is what Leon Katz, President and CEO of GICI, represents as the 3 P's of the commodity business. Those three P's are People, Product and Procedures. With any of the P’s missing, the transaction can end up a failure.

If you are new to the business or maybe you just have been lucky in the past, you might not know that there is a lot of fraud. Some of the individuals offering products for sale are phonies and don’t have the product or don’t plan to purchase the product. Their goals are to commit fraud such as get your banking information, collect money without delivery of product, or even worse. It is a simple fact that every day people are cheated in commodity deals being offered.

PEOPLE

It is critical that you know something about the people you are working with and that they are reliable and honest individuals. You might also want to check with the International Chamber of Commerce ( http://www.iccwbo.org/ ) or even with Interpol ( http://www.interpol.int ) to see if the people you are about to do business with are on their black list. You might be surprised to see the people you are trying to close a deal with might be on the list. Another thing you need to do is ask about referrals from people you can contact who have closed deals with your buyer/seller, mandate, or intermediaries. Our offices have uncovered many frauds some of which have been prosecuted.

PRODUCT

Sometimes we see that the PRODUCT being offered is not real, does not meet the specifications or quality of the buyer, or does not even exist. The reasons are sometimes to get information about prospective buyers and sellers and sometimes to receive money for products that do not exist. If the purchase or sale is handled correctly, we can avoid financial lost in these situations.

PROCEDURES

On the side of buyer or seller, having the proper procedures and sequence of payment can avoid many potential losses. Each party wants to make sure they are dealing with capable buyers and sellers. Proof of Product and Proof of Funds is always an issue. We find that if we have real buyers, sellers, and product, that this can all be worked out to the satisfaction of both parties. Also, proving to each party that they will be able to perform is an important part of the procedure process that has to occur in the right sequence before payment is made.

With the 3 P’s in place, a successful transaction usually occurs.
